How to Prepare for Your First Spray Tanning Session

Getting a spray tan can be an exciting way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without the harmful effects of UV exposure. However, many first-timers may feel uncertain about what to expect or how to prepare for their first session. In this blog post, we will guide you step-by-step through the essential preparations needed for your inaugural spray tanning experience.

Understanding Spray Tanning

Spray tanning involves applying a fine mist of tanning solution to your skin. The solution contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the amino acids in the skin to create a bronzed effect. Unlike traditional tanning methods, spray tanning offers a quick and even finish, making it increasingly popular for events, vacations, and life in general.

Before you book an appointment, it’s helpful to understand various types of solutions available. Some solutions are light and give a subtle glow, while others are deeper and richer. Discussing your desired tan shade prior to your service will help you and your spray tan artist choose the best option for your skin type.

Preparing for Your First Spray Tanning Session

Preparation is key to ensuring you get the best possible spray tan. Here are some steps you should take before heading to the salon:

Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells that can interfere with an even spray tan. Aim to exfoliate two to three days prior to your appointment. Use a gentle body scrub and or exfoliating mitt to exfoliate the entire body, while, focusing on areas like elbows, knees, and feet where skin tends to be drier.

Shave or Hair Removal Services

If you plan to shave or have a har removal service., do so at least 24 hours before your session. This allows your skin to calm and ensures no redness, irritation, or product residue is present during the tanning process. Avoid shaving or having a hair removal service on the day of your appointment as this can lead to blotchy/uneven results.

Avoid Moisturizers and Creams

On the day of your appointment, ensure your skin is clean and free from moisturizers, deodorants, perfumes, and any other barriers. These products can create a barrier, preventing the tanning solution from properly adhering to your skin. A clean slate will help in developing a flawless tan.

Dress Appropriately

What you wear to your appointment can affect the outcome of your spray tan. Opt for dark, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid wearing tight clothes as they can cause streaks or marks on your freshly tanned skin. It is often advisable to bring flip-flops or open-toed shoes to allow your feet to dry without transferring color.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment can help keep your skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin develops a more even tan and can help it last longer.

What to Expect During Your Session

During your first spray tan session, it is essential to know what will happen so that you are more comfortable:

  1. Arrival and Consultation: You’ll arrive at the tanning salon, and we will discuss your desired outcome. Be honest about the kind of tan you want, whether it's a light glow or a deeper bronze.

  2. Prepping Your Skin: The technician may ask you to remove any remaining clothing and will provide you with disposable undergarments if desired.

  3. The Application: The actual spray tan usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes. I will guide you through poses to ensure even coverage. Remember to breathe and relax—this is a quick and painless process.

  4. Drying: After application, you'll stand in plavce and I will dry you down.. Think...end of the car wash! (haha)

  5. Post-Tan Instructions: Once the tan has dried, I will give you care instructions. This may include recommendations on when to shower and how to maintain the tan.

Maintaining Your Tan

After your tanning session, maintaining your glow is crucial. Here are some tips:

Post-Tan Care Instructions

Typically, you should avoid showering for at least 2-8 hours (depending on solution used) after the application. This period allows the tan to develop fully. When you can finally shower, avoid using hot water and use a gentle, sulfate-free body wash.

Moisturizing Regularly

To help extend the life of your tan, moisturize your skin regularly. Hydrated skin will not only feel better, but it will help maintain an even tone. Look for moisturizers that are hydrating but do not contain exfoliating agents.

Avoiding Chlorinated Water

If you’re swimming, it's best to avoid chlorinated pools for the first few days, as chlorine can strip away the tan faster. Saltwater can also cause fading, so be cautious.

By keeping these tips in mind, you are well on your way to a successful and satisfying spray tan experience. Embrace these guidelines to ensure that your first session is both fun and fruitful!
